Week 3 - Change

Sermon Notes

“Know what’s weird? Day by day nothing seems to change, but pretty soon everything’s different.”

-- Bill Waterson (Creator of Calvin and Hobbes)

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched, or go bad.”

-- C.S. Lewis

“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

-- Victor Frankl

1 Samuel 9:2

Saul, an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the others.

1 Samuel 14:47

After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.

Ego outgrew dependence

1 Samuel 18:7

As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”

1 Samuel 31:5–6

But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together that same day.

Hope through change

“The illiterate of the future are not those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”

-- Alvin Toffler

I can

We can

God can

Mission never changes. Methods always change.

I can. We can. God can.

Romans 8:11

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

“Whoever is still ALIVE has reason for hope”

-- Victor Frankl
