Sermon Notes
“Jesus Christ himself is the definition of holiness and its living example.”
-- Keith Drury, Holiness for Ordinary People
Failure and regret
Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
We are all legends in our own minds.
Hope is the cure.
Matthew 26:33–35
“Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”
But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.”
Luke 22:61–62
The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
“[Jesus] asks us to bravely live the un-lived life within and to stop believing the lie that we are damaged, done or dead. Three simple words give us chain-busting freedom over our pasts—'I.Own.It.’”
-- Mike Foster, A Not So Perfect Guide to Freedom
John 21:2–3
Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
“ . . . One beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.”
-- D. T. Niles
We want to reach spiritually hungry people and introduce them to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and an active role in Christian community.
John 21:7
As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
John 21:15
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
1 Peter 1:3–4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you,
The question at the core of every regret and failure is not “Why did I do it?” but rather “Is grace enough?”
