Sermons / The Way It Works / Do Not Murder
Sermon Notes
Exodus 20:13
You must not murder.
Matthew 5:21–22
“You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.”
But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.
The law of God shows me I’m a sinner, and sends me to Jesus for salvation. Jesus returns me to the law, to show me the way life works.
Exodus 20:2-3
I am the Lord your God….You shall have no other gods before me.
All that we see around us is a result of the existence of a God who personally and purposefully created each part and each aspect of all that is his own.
Genesis 1:26–27
Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. . .So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Who am I?
Where did I come from?
Why am I here?
Where am I going?
And does it matter?
“Do not destroy what I have created, specifically, that which bears my image.”
Romans 8:6–7
So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.
Matthew 5:21–26
“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell."
“If I can define you differently than what God says about you, I can do what I want, say what I want, treat you as I want because you no longer matter.”
1 John 4:20
Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars…
We appear before God in the context of all our relationships.
“Do you want to dance?”
“Who is going to lead the dance?”
“You lead the Dance.”
“Even I can Dance.”
It is the ministry of the Holy Spirit within our lives to conform us to the will and authority of God, so that in obeying these commands, we’re not seeking peace with him, but we are finding pleasure with his authority in our lives.
Psalm 139:14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
One word from You
Things change on Your authority
Your word it's true
Things change on your authority
My fight is not my own
It's end is in Your hands
I worship You because I know all things
Must bow to Your command
