Sermon Notes
We treat the symptom but neglect the source.
Righteousness - “dikaiosyne,”
“Equitable in character or action.”
Genesis 3:21
And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.
Romans 3:10–12
As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”
We are measured against God’s glory, holiness and righteousness.
Romans 3:21
But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
The purpose of the law was to teach us we cannot live up to the law, we cannot keep the law, we cannot live up to God’s righteous standard.
Lord Jesus, you are my righteousness, I am your sin. You took on you what was mine; yet set on me what was yours. You became what you were not, that I might become what I was not.
--Martin Luther
Romans 3:22
This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference.
Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Luke 15: 22-24
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’
God never changes the robe of righteousness to fit me. Rather He changes me to fit the robe.
Romans 3:23–24
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:25–26
For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood . . .
Ezekiel 36:25–26
“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away . . . And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. . .
