Then And Now

WEEK 6 - SOVEREIGN

Sermon Notes

Proverbs 18:6

A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.

Responsibility

Genesis 39:7–9

Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” . . . But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. No one here has more authority than I do. . . How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”

Joseph did the right thing, and bad things still happened.

We need more than a God who is waiting for us to let go.

Sovereign

Genesis 39:21

But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden.

  • God’s Sovereignty
  • Our Responsibility

Genesis 50:16-17

So they sent this message to Joseph: “Before your father died, he instructed us to say to you: ‘Please forgive your brothers for the great wrong they did to you—for their sin in treating you so cruelly.’

Genesis 50:19-21

But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people

“Anything God has ever done he can do now. Anything God has ever done anywhere, he can do here. Anything God has ever done for anyone, he can do for you.”

-- A. W. Tozer

God did something at the cross.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God is doing something right now through his church.

1 Corinthians 3:9

For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building.

Revelation 19:7

Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.

God will do something when King Jesus returns.

Revelation 21:3–7

I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” 6 And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. 7 All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.
