Sermon Notes

ALIVE is trying to respond with wisdom in these times.

Unprecedented—never done or known before

Does God provide security in unprecedented times?

Psalm 120:1

I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me.

Psalm 124:8

Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 125:1-2

Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever. Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever.

Psalm 139:5

You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.

John 17:11

[T]hey are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father . . .  now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.

They knew they were God’s people.

Our security comes from a God who is, not from how I feel.

The Sword of Damocles

According to the story, Damocles has a conversation with a king named Dionysius. Damocles was remarking how wonderful it must be to be king with all the wealth and comfort surrounding him.  So, King Dionysus offers to switch places with Damocles for one day so Damocles could experience being the king for a day. Damocles took over as King and sat in the King’s throne, but before leaving the throne Dionysius had hung a huge sword above the throne suspended by a single horse hair. The lesson the king was trying to teach Damocles was that even though you are king, you are ever watchful in fear and anxiety for what dangers might be coming your way.

Psalm 125: 3

The wicked will not rule the land of the godly,

1 Corinthians 10:13 (The Message)

No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.

Security

  • I don’t trust what I feel, I trust who I know.
  • The danger today is temporary, the relationship I have is eternal.
