Guidance

Sermon Notes

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”

Ephesians 4:11–13

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Confession: Admitting our sins to ourselves, to God and to others.

Psalm 40:11–13

Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. For troubles surround me— too many to count!

My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. Please, Lord, rescue me! Come quickly, Lord, and help me.

Guidance: Hearing God’s voice and discerning His will in Christian community

We tend to talk and not listen. We ask but do not hear.

John 10:27

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Revelation 3:20

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

Mark 4:3

Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.

Mark 4:9

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Mark 4:23

If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.

Mark 9:2–4

There he (Jesus) was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Mark 9:7

Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

  • When we ask, we speak and God listens. When we listen, God speaks.
  • When we ask, we have a timeline. When we listen, we learn patience.
  • When we ask, the relationship with God is defined by us, but when we listen, our relationship with God is why we are with him.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Look for an example of God speaking in your life.
  • Write down the names of people who offer sound guidance in your life.
  • Has isolation from Christian community impacted God’s guidance?

Proverbs 3:5–6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Isaiah 30:21

Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

James 1:5–6

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
