Sermon Notes
Hebrews 10:25
Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
At home, in my own house, there is no warmth or vigor in me, but in the church, when the multitude is gathering together, a fire is kindled in my heart and it breaks its way through.
--Martin Luther
Confession: Admitting our sins to ourselves, to God and to others.
Guidance: Hearing God’s voice and discerning His will in Christian community.
Worship: drawing near to God through adoration and holy living.
John 4:23
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.
Matthew 4:10
“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”
Two Kinds of “Knowing”:
Jeremiah 29:12–14
In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord.
James 4:8
Come close to God, and God will come close to you.
If we use the one method of knowing in the other area, we will prevent the very thing we seek.
Psalm 63:1-6
O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory.
Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy. I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night.
What does it look like to worship, to know God, to surrender to God?
1. Practice the presence of God daily
2. Prepare for gathered worship
3. Gather in the power of the Lord
4. Cultivate a holy dependency
5. Learn the sacrifice of worship
6. Worship begins with holy expectancy and ends with holy obedience
