Celebration of Discipline

Sermon Notes

One that focuses on spiritual renewal through the presence of God.

Holy Discontent - deep dissatisfaction with the low state of our faith, the church and the culture. This is where the reality we are living in moves from merely frustration and anger, and into a spiritual grieving and holy hunger for something more.

Preparation - deep work of preparation that God undertakes in the hearts of those who long to be filled with his Presence.

Contending - this is where the person of faith moves from a posture of consumption to one of contending for God’s presence and power in their life. We come to the point where we realize we cannot be changed by anything other than God’s presence.

Holy Patterns - At this point we reorient our lives around patterns that enable us to live and operate in God’s presence while living in a fallen world.

Renewal - As God moves, new life flows into a person or people of God. New spiritual life breaks out and the person walks with God in a new presence with a new power.

Revival - renewal gone viral.

Gateway Crisis - Gateways are paths we can choose to walk through or not walk through.

Jeremiah 10:23

I know, O Lord, that the way of human beings is not in their control, that mortals as they walk cannot direct their steps.

Jeremiah 10:23 (MSG)

I know, God, that mere mortals can’t run their own lives, that men and women don’t have what it takes to take charge of life.

Who is Jesus and what is Jesus like?

Who am I and what am I like?

We are made in the image of God.

Jeremiah 10:23

I know, O Lord, that the way of human beings is not in their control, that mortals as they walk cannot direct their steps.

Genesis 1:26–27

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. . .

Jeremiah 10:23

I know, O Lord, that the way of human beings is not in their control, that mortals as they walk cannot direct their steps.

Psalm 1:6

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Proverbs 14:12

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jeremiah 10:23

I know, O Lord, that the way of human beings is not in their control, that mortals as they walk cannot direct their steps.

John 9:4–5

As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.  While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 17:4

I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

Jesus is saying, there is no lighting system in us by which to do our work or find our way.

We are made in the image of God.

We are able to relate to God at a personal level.

We do not know the way forward.

The way is found in a personal relationship with God.

We are not self-originating.

We are not self-sustaining.

We are not self-explanatory.
