Sermon Notes

Jeremiah 17:9

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

One-ism: (All is One) Everything is an uncreated accident

Two-ism: (All is Two) Everything is created by a Creator

Distinctions are part of our Creator

Augustine’s term for one-ism: incurvatus

David’s Response:

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight (Psalm 51:4)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)

Follow Your Heart = Follow Your Emotions & Desires

Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back. (Prov. 29:11 NLT)

Should We Disconnect from Feelings & Desires?

Respect Your Feelings

Discern Your Desires

Guard your heart above all else, for everything you do flows from it. (Prov. 4:23)

Unify Your Heart

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones (Prov. 3:5-7)

Excurvatus: Follow Your Heart to Holiness

John Wesley's Covenant Renewal:

Commit yourselves to Christ as his servants.

In some we may please Christ and please ourselves.

But then there are other works where we cannot please Christ except by denying ourselves.

It is necessary, therefore, that we consider what it means to be a servant of Christ.

Let us, therefore, go to Christ, and pray:

I am no longer my own, but yours.

Put me to what you will, Rank me with whom you will;

Put me to doing, Put me to suffering,

Let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you,

Exalted for you, or Brought low for you,

Let me full, Let me be empty,

Let me have all things, Let me have nothing:

I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things

To your pleasure and disposal.

And now, glorious and blessed God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

You are mine and I am yours. So be it!

And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.

Amen
