Sermon Notes

Confirmation bias - The tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs or theories.

If God is within you, of course you should follow your heart. … If you follow your heart, then you will have your truth and I will have my truth.

You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.

Acts 19:18–20

Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.

Acts 19:25–27

“Men, you know we receive a good income from this business. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people . . . [Paul] says that man-made gods are no gods at all. There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name . . . the great goddess Artemis will be discredited, and the goddess herself . . . will be robbed of her divine majesty.”

The “with God” life disrupts the way we have always done things. And if He is The Truth, it absolutely must disrupt our lives.

Acts 19:28–32

When they heard this, they were furious . . .Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized . . . Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia, and rushed as one man into the theater [25,000 seats]. Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him. Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater. The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.

2 Timothy 4:4

They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Reject reality and aimlessly fall into fantasy.

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Eugenics - the study of how to arrange reproduction within a human population to increase the occurrence of heritable characteristics regarded as desirable.

When we wander into myths and away from truth, it is not harmless

2 Peter 1:16

We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Philippians 1:21

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

If Jesus is king of everything, then that changes everything.
